I still remember my first time in Telluride, coming over the hill from Down Valley and seeing town and the valley and Ingram Falls. It was spring, we were on a family road trip around Colorado, and within 2 years, we'd move to town. I was 9.

Telluride is home for me. I grew up here, hiking in the summers, skiing every day after and during school, and finding trouble (and joy) in all the corners — and mine shafts, and bars, and... — of this place.

I started The Telluride Local because I've seen how hard it can be to plan a trip here. Last week, I had lunch with a friend who had run across a new real estate listing in the Wall Street Journal. He was curious: what is Telluride like? How does it feel? What's the vibe?

Well, friend, it's complicated, and different for a local. But the travel guides on the internet either read like PR gloss, are put out by TelSki, or they skip the details that actually matter once you arrive. I want this blog to be the in-between: local recommendations with heart.

Expect advice on everything from where to ski on a powder day, to the hikes worth grinding through (the altitude is no joke), to restaurants that locals actually like. My goal is to help you plan the best possible trip here, and I'll share everything I know. Okay, except for how to catch a trout in Silver Lake — and maybe I'll hold back one or two secret powder stashes.

So, welcome. This is my way of giving back to the best ski town. I hope The Telluride Local helps you see the best of Telluride.

Where to Start

If you're planning a first trip, start with the 48 Hours in Telluride itinerary and the How to Get Here guide. If you're coming for skiing, the Getting Ready for Ski Season primer has everything you need. And if it's your first time at altitude, please read the altitude guide before your first night out.
